Minneapolis, Minnesota — Liam Conejo Ramos is back home in Minnesota after weeks that drew national attention to his detention by immigration authorities.
The five-year-old returned alongside his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, marking the end of a difficult chapter for the family and a moment of relief for supporters across the country.
The journey home was facilitated by Joaquin Castro, who traveled with Liam and his father from Texas to Minneapolis following their release from the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley.
Castro had previously visited the family in detention and publicly advocated for Liam’s freedom, citing concerns about the child’s physical and emotional well-being.
Upon arrival in Minnesota, Liam was greeted with warmth and celebration.
He returned with the belongings that became symbols of his case — his winter hat and Spider-Man backpack — and was welcomed by family, friends, and members of his community who had followed his story closely.
A photo shared after the reunion also showed Liam with Ilhan Omar, underscoring the political and community support that surrounded the child’s return.
Omar had previously spoken out against the detention of children and families, calling for more humane immigration practices.
Supporters expressed gratitude to Castro for personally escorting Liam home and emphasized that the outcome reflected sustained public pressure and advocacy.
While celebrating Liam’s safe return, advocates reiterated that many other children and families remain in detention facilities and vowed to continue pushing for broader reforms.
For now, however, the focus remains on a simple message echoed throughout Minneapolis: welcome home, Liam.
